System Will Vastly Improve Security and Communication Islip, NY – In a move that will vastly improve the Town of Islip’s communications backbone, Supervisor Phil Nolan and the Islip Town Board have authorized the purchase of telecommunications and Internet materials and services from Long Island Fiber Exchange, Inc. As Internet technology has rapidly advanced in the last decade, the Town of Islip has suffered from outdated network connections, slowing down many aspects of business. Until now, Islip Town buildings have been connected to separate Internet networks, impairing the transfer of information that would be vital in the event of an emergency. In addition, while Islip residents enjoy the convenience of electronic payment at many establishments, the Town has been unable to offer this feature. For these reasons, and with the Town Board’s approval, Long Island Fiber Exchange is being brought in to equip Islip Town with the latest technology. “This system-wide upgrade is of enormous importance to the smooth and safe operation of our Town government,” said Supervisor Nolan. “This deal will bring an increase in services as well as a reduction in costs, two things that every Town resident can appreciate.” Long Island Fiber Exchange will be upgrading the Town’s capabilities by installing a high-performance network known as GIGe (Gigabit Ethernet). This will allow for the transfer of information at a speed of 1,000 kilobytes per second, compared to the previous rate of 1 kilobyte per second. The Town of Islip has four major buildings with at least three floors, totaling an average of 200 users, and at peak time up to 100 additional people are expected to be using the network from outside locations. The increased bandwidth (the amount of data a system can transfer at a certain time) of this upgraded network will be able to handle the Town’s current needs, as well as any future innovations and increased traffic. “This is a high-performance network that is both highly reliable and highly secure and will help keep the Town of Islip up to speed with the technological advances of the 21st century,” said Cedric Cleveland, Director of Information Management for Islip Town. In addition to an increase in speed and efficiency, this network upgrade will provide the Town with a highly reliable system that would be essential in the event of any Town emergency. The improved network would be able to handle the massive influx of information that a major crisis would involve, as well as make possible the rapid transfer of information between Town offices. The system also will vastly improve the Town’s network security, allowing satellite Town offices, such as Brookwood Hall, to accept electronic payments. These security enhancements, along with reliability and bandwidth improvements, will improve every aspect of how the Town of Islip serves its constituents. |
